The pop in Apollo Micro Systems, RBI’s annual report, ₹100 & ₹200 notes and more…

In this week’s wrapup, we take a look at the RBI’s annual report, China’s rare earth mineral squeeze and its impact on India’s auto industry, SEBI’s new rules for the F&O market, the push for smaller denomination notes and India's plan to revamp its aviation sector.

And for this week’s markets edition, we break down what's driving the rally at Apollo Micro Systems. Is it the growing defence narrative? Big export orders? Or is it all just hype? Click here to read the full markets story and find out.

Meanwhile, here’s a recap of what we wrote over the week...

The RBI Annual Report decoded

The RBI just handed over a record ₹2.69 lakh crore surplus to the government — its biggest ever.

But beyond the headline, we broke down what drove this, how rural India held up consumption, why gold loans are becoming a regulatory headache and why the digital rupee’s circulation is up 334% despite barely being used.

Rare earth magnets are tiny. But without them, cars don’t move. They’re critical for making components like seat motors, power steering and electric drivetrains. And with China tightening its grip on these crucial materials, India’s auto sector is feeling the heat.

The bad news? India has the world’s fifth-largest rare earth reserves but barely produces or processes them. And while the government is rolling out new policies and pilot projects, we’re still years away from building a reliable mine-to-magnet supply chain.

A simple explainer on SEBI’s new F&O rules

The SEBI recently issued a 21-page circular to clean up F&O trading. From delta-adjusted exposure to smarter ban rules, tighter position limits and new pre-open sessions — the changes could impact everyone from retail traders to algo desks.

And while it may all sound technical, the message is clear: trade all you want, but do it with real risk awareness and actual liquidity.

Check out our Wednesday story for the full breakdown.

India wants more lower denomination notes?

No, ₹500 notes aren’t being withdrawn. But what is happening is a push to get more ₹100s and ₹200s into ATMs.

We broke down the reasons — from rising counterfeits to the push for digital payments — and explained what this shift means for the economy, your wallet and the RBI’s printing bill.

Spoiler: Replacing big notes with smaller ones could cost thousands of crores. Check out Thursday's newsletter to find out why.

Can India become an aviation superpower?

India wants to be more than just a passenger aviation giant, it wants to be an MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) hub too.

Right now, we send most aircraft abroad for repairs. But with air travel booming, the government wants to localise aircraft maintenance and grab a slice of a $4 billion opportunity.

That means fixing our messy tax regime, building hangars, training engineers and easing red tape. Can we pull it off? Find out in our Friday story.
